Book Excerpt

“Phoenix, don’t drink, love!” Nick said taking the decanter that she had just picked up from her and sitting it down. Nick hated that she depended on alcohol to help her with her anxiety. It was not good for her. Turning and picking up the decanter, Phoenix poured herself a shot of brandy. “The only people that can tell me what to do, Nick, are my daddy and my man and YOU are neither; so cheers,” she said before downing the entire shot. ‘Jesus that shit burns! That will show him, brainiac!’ she was thinking. Walking over to her window, Nick put one hand in his pocket and the other on the back of his neck. “Don’t start this again, P. Why does it have to be anything? Why can’t we just enjoy each other?” Nick said to her turning around to face her.

“Nick, do you see Vixen and Daniel? Shit, even Nya and Sal? I want a relationship; a bond with someone that I can count on and that can count on me. Not just a regular dick to service me. Not that your dick is not fabulous, but damn,” Phoenix yelled at him.

‘DAMN IT,’ Nick was thinking. ‘Not you, Phoenix. I thought you understood.’

Putting his head back and looking at the ceiling, Nick decided to stop the bleeding before it got worse.

“I am sorry, love, but you are not the type of woman that I would marry,” he said looking at her and putting his hands in his pockets.

“Ha,” Phoenix said taking a moment so that she would not let him see that he had just broken her heart. “That’s fine, Nick, I am more than enough for a man that is man enough for me. That obviously is not you,” she said walking over to her chair and sitting down. “Now, please get the hell out of my office before I have you removed,” she finished. Phoenix started typing a memo like she was not devastated.

Nick started to walk toward her. He knew that he had pushed her too far but he did not want her hoping she would get something he couldn’t give. “Phoenix, love, I just…” he started to say but was cut off by Phoenix.

“I am sorry. Did you forget where the door was?” she said angrily without yelling. The James women had a way of telling you to ‘kiss their ass and go to hell’ with just a look. Vixen was A LOT better at it than Phoenix but she was doing a hell of a job right now. “Let me help you; it’s right over there,” she finished pointing at the door.

“P, I am not leaving until we talk,” Nick said to her.

“Ha! Really?” Phoenix said smirking as she pressed the emergency button on her desk. Within two minutes, members of her executive security team were walking into her office.

“Yes, ma’am?” one of them said.

Phoenix stood up and said as she was walking to the bathroom, “Mr. Crown seems to be having trouble getting the fuck out. Help him out, won’t you?” she said before slamming the bathroom door. She waited until she heard her office door close and slid to the floor and cried.

Book Excerpt

“Just another distinction between us and the humans,” Aunt Tilda mused softly, almost to herself. “We were once immortal. Then more and more they broke the rules, got involved with the humans, and produced children with scrambled up DNA, like you and me. It’s a recessive gene, you know— it only shows up every so many generations in the families that carry it. The last time it showed up, was me. There has never been another, until you.”

“The… humans?” Till’s head swam. “You speak of humans as if they’re something you and I are not. If we’re not that, could you explain to me exactly what you think we are then?”

“Fairy Godmothers, dear.” She said it casually, without ceremony.

Till slid down the wall and sat on the floor. “I’m sorry, but did you just say…”

Aunt Tilda sighed. “What I am about to tell you won’t be easy to accept, Till. I can only hope that in the days ahead that you will be able to come to terms with what it all means. I hope it will bring you some comfort, finally understanding why it is that you’ve always been different,” she explained. “I’m a Fairy Godmother, Till, and so are you. Well, not quite yet… but the process has already started, and your adult traits are beginning to show up. Things you may have worried weren’t normal about yourself… like the insomnia. All easily explained, because they are all a part of who you are meant to become.”

Till laughed out loud. “You mean, like in Cinderella… that kind of Fairy Godmother?”

“Well, we tend to dress a little more stylishly and have better hair, but yes, like that.” She saw how troubled Till was by this revelation. “Are you all right, dear?”

“Am I… am I all right?” Till exclaimed. “She tells me I’m some sort of fairy human hybrid and then she asks me if I’m all right?” She scrambled to her feet and started for the door. “Aunt Tilda, I don’t mean any disrespect, but you are sincerely freaking me out right now, and I think I need to take a walk.”

“But we’ve so much work to do, and not much time left.”

“I know, I know… you keep telling me that.”

“There’s a package from the lawyer that you need to look at. I’ve taken care of everything already, but you need to—”

“I really need some air… I’m sorry.” Till dashed for the nearest door, which happened to be the one to the back porch, and ran outside without her coat.

It was snowing, coming down in a flurry that made it difficult to see the sky. She fought to catch her breath, tilting her head up toward the faded image of the sun as it tried to break through heavy clouds. It only succeeded in sending down a few thin, bright shafts.

She felt sick, and yet something about what the old woman was saying did not feel crazy to her anymore. That part was beginning to worry her more than anything else.

Her convict heritage and love of history have seen the author explore this in ‘Charter to Redemption.’ Yet is is perhaps Australian dogged determination has seen this debut author as a new name in fiction. Although amazon reviews reflect her work, it is pertinent to note that the author’s story is not unique, although her journey in writing has been. Numerous rejections never daunted the author, and many years after her dream was envisaged, so was the reality. Yet for all the countless doubts that niggle every writer who has lived in hope, it is humbling praise indeed when reviewer F. Stanford writes of ‘Charter to Redemption’ and Ms Blackmore’s work: “this could very well be the benchmark for the standard of modern-day classics.”

D. J. Blackmore is currently working on the sequel, ‘Consider the Ravens.’

Book Excerpt

“Celia!”

I wished for lightning to strike me dead. Alone with a sexy man and being summoned by my mom made me feel five all over again.

“Mommy’s calling. I wouldn’t mess with her if I were you. She’s feisty like you.”

“Why are you here? Don’t you have a job, a life, a woman to string along?” My bravado was waning, and the grip I had around my upper chest was cutting off circulation to my heart and making it difficult to breathe. Or maybe that was Gabe. I wasn’t certain. I released my arms and gave my body a little wiggle.

Gabe’s eyebrows shot up. “That’s not a very nice thing to say. You don’t know me, either.”

“Bite me!” I snarled.

“I’m trying. You’re not letting me close enough to sniff.” His smile only widened.

I gave him one of Mom’s evil-eye glares, hoping it would bore holes in his chest, but he only laughed again.

“You’re sexy when you get mad. What are you like when you’re purring like a kitten?” His eyes were blazing, and his smile sparked of sensuality.

I was losing it. My hormones were off the Richter scale. “That’s pathetic. Is that the best you have? I’m not one of the admins at the office, Gabe. Give it up. I told you before. I’m not interested in an office fling. I’m a serious journalist.” I wasn’t able to get that last line out without smiling.

“Uh-huh. You’re not very convincing.” His square shoulders and slightly tilted head thawed the last of my reserve.

I weakened. “OK. Why are you really here?”

“Honestly, to see if my photos helped your mom and aunt. I had a good time last week, took a few photos, got Jackson to write up a blurb, and we ran it. Looks like you’re going to have a busy night.”

Author Bio

But Amy had an identical twin and her story had to be told as well. Saving Jamie dictated her story, Carol listened and Jamie’s adventure came to life.

Mrs. Braswell says she writes what she loves to read. That is a lot of suspense and a little romance thrown in to keep the emotions flowing. Book Excerpt

Taking several deep breaths, she shut her eyes and wiped her wet hands on her dripping wet designer jeans. Bending over, she scratched the wet ground for the special black rock she buried a couple of years ago. “Damn.” She dug her fingers into the mud until the rock appeared and another nail cracked. It wasn’t anything that couldn’t be fixed but it ticked her off. She shouldn’t have to do this but she didn’t trust anyone else.

Her fingers gripped the key and she stood to unlock the gate. Her finger’s shook as she tried to fit the key in the small hole. She sensed someone behind her just before a hairy arm snaked around her neck. A gruff voice whispered in her ear,    “If you scream, I’ll slit your throat.”

The sharp knife pierced the skin on her neck again and another man stepped in front of her and grinned, flashing two gold teeth. He placed duct tape over her mouth, snuffing out the scream that rose in her throat. Her arms were forced back, fastened with zip ties, and the keys to the house and gate were ripped from her hand. Jamie’s heart drummed heavily in her ears. She wanted to run but her legs had turned to rubber. She heard the gate click closed and the two men drug her around the pool to the back door of her old home.

“Oh, crap,” she thought. What the hell was going on? Who were they?

Book Blurb

Row of columns (Italy, Vatican)Ruiz Albury went to the Bahamas for one reason, to get back what was his as the rightful heir of his father with rage and resentment that has been festering for years.  But once he gets there, he’s treated as part of a family, shown love and care he’d only dreamed about and all his carefully laid plans are forgotten. In fact, they are buried deep in his mind when he meets Melody Sinclair.

Melody Sinclair thought she’d found one of the good ones.  She loved Ruiz and trusted him enough to make him a part of her life, only to have it shuttered when she finds out his secret. Heart broken and distraught, she gets drunk and decides to get over him by getting under someone else, only for it to turn out to be the worst mistake of her life.  Trapped, with nowhere to turn, Ruiz sweeps in like a knight in shining armor ready to battle her dragon.

This is the last instalment of The Albury Affairs Series.

Book #1 Her Venice Affair

Book #2 His Bahamas Affair

Book #3 His Paris Affair

Book Excerpt

Ruiz slouched in the lawn chair, a bottle of beer in one hand and his cell phone in the other, watching and listening to the sounds of a happy family as the knife of jealousy repeatedly stabbed him in the chest.

He watched as his sister Riana blew her husband a kiss to where he stood at the grill with his best friend Matthew and with a broad smile Allan caught it and pressed it to his chest over his heart. She smiled lovingly at him as she strolled rocking the new addition to her family, Allan Patrick Sinclair III, to sleep. Ruiz knew his nine month old nephew would wake almost immediately after, once the laughter and other happy noises grew louder, penetrating his haze of sleep. He didn’t like to be left out. Ruiz could relate.

And just a few feet away from him, Reno and Loraine were having one of their famous rows that usually ended with them sneaking off together and emerging an hour later with the biggest grins on their faces. Loraine was now four months pregnant so there was no sneaking away this time. They all had their fingers crossed—Reno especially—that she would carry this baby to term with no complications. After the attack over a year ago that resulted in Loraine losing their first baby together they had fingers and toes crossed. Sure they were all worried, treating her like a fragile egg but Reno was a little extreme. From Loraine’s complaints they barely had sex which apparently was like torture to a horny hormonal pregnant woman—who knew? Ruiz was sure one day his brother would lose it and wrap his wife in bubble wrap. The attention was driving Loraine nuts considering she was barely showing. At the beginning of her pregnancy, she had been very understanding but now she really looked ready to punch Reno when she stood up mere seconds after he settled her down on the cushioned chair. Amy, Matthew’s wife watched, quietly laughing as she cradled her second son, seven months old Ethan in her arms.

Why couldn’t he have his happily ever after? Did he not deserve it? Wasn’t his entire life difficult enough to earn one?

Francesca.Lost.Nation.Cover.FNLTitle: Francesca of Lost Nation

Author: Lucinda Sue Crosby

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Winner of Four Literary Prizes / Author selected as one of “50 Authors You Should be Reading” by The Authors Show online media outlet

This family saga is “funny at times and filled with little pearls of everyday wisdom, it is as much a romantic thriller as it is a perfect little capsule of a time gone by. It is a book about love of all kinds – between grandmother and child, between child and dog, between man and woman.”

If you like Old Fashioned Romance Reads similar to Norah Roberts or Kristin Hanna for kindle, you will want to add this one to your collection:

Here’s a little about the story:

When a mysterious man named Matthew appears in the small Iowa town of Lost Nation, his sudden arrival raises questions about his past. Quiet with an apparent taste for rum, Matthew makes it clear he doesn’t want to make friends. He isn’t too pleased to be dropped off at Home Farm where the independent and eccentric Francesca doesn’t accept bad manners or booze binges.

Matthew doesn’t want to form personal ties and intends to move on as soon as his damaged leg from a recent plane crash heals. But a series of events draw him into reluctant relationships: One with the feisty Francesca, the second with her 10-year-old granddaughter Sarah.

In spite of her own reservations, Francesca finds herself falling for this brooding pilot but his past looms between the pair and what neither knows is that Sarah, Francesca’s 10-year-old granddaughter, has encountered a stranger of her own … leading to a climatic confrontation that will put her and her grandmother’s life in danger.

Those that enjoy family sagas or family drama will also embrace this story

There are plenty of eccentric characters, including Francesca who is quirky and full of secrets – she keeps the town gossips busy. There are some dramatic family dynamics that cause tension and uneasiness at times. Because the story is told through the wide-eyed 10-year-old Sarah, this romance mystery is humorous at times.

Readers love this kindle romance fiction, because it has a touch of everything: friendship, humor, romance, adventure and mystery.
