Book Excerpt from Ruby’s Letters

Book Excerpt

September 2006

Three large men glared at Emma Hopkins, their beefy arms crossed over equally massive chests. Her gloved hands tightened around the handle of a sledgehammer.

                Her employees. Fearless. Manly.

Pouting like a bunch of four-year-olds.

“Oh, stop sulking. You guys always get to do the demolition. It’s my turn.”

“We are no sulking. We are waiting,” Carlos quipped in a thick Cuban accent. “Swing the hammer.”

“Yeah, just pretend the wall is the head of that meter maid who gave you a ticket while you were stopped at a red light,” Bart said.

Relaxing her hold, she scrutinized the laborer. “You know, Bart, you really scare me sometimes.”

“He scares all of us.” Mike, her head mason, flicked a contractor bag until it opened.

“Gee, I can’t imagine why.” Emma returned to her task. A gentle late-summer breeze came in through the open window, bringing with it the pleasing fragrance of damp earth. “Hush, all of you. I need to focus.”

She studied the five-foot-high brick structure jutting out from the wall that imprisoned the enormous kitchen fireplace, looking for the perfect place to land her blow. The bottom half appeared solid, with pin-straight mortar joints, but the top was sloppy and uneven. Either two different people had built this thing, or someone had imbibed a few cocktails while on the job. In any case, behind the wall was a huge fireplace she was itching to get her hands on.

She’d earned this privilege.

With a deep breath, Emma swung the hammer through the air.

As soon as the heavy metal head made contact, the top portion of the barrier gave way. She gasped in surprise, stumbling as the hammer dropped from her hands. Bricks and mortar collapsed into the firebox as a blast of cold, stale air swept through her, sending chills down her spine. No, not chills. More like an electric shock that froze her body for a millisecond before it warmed again.

Emma steadied herself. What the hell?

Estás bien, Boss Lady?”

She focused on Carlos’s concerned face, trying to shake off the odd feeling. “Yeah. I was just startled at how easily it fell.”

He smirked. “Even the wall knows not to mess with you before you’ve had your café.”

Emma removed her safety glasses and slapped them against his chest. “You’ve just been reduced to bag holder.”

While she mindlessly tossed debris into the contractor bag Carlos grudgingly held open for her, her sense of pride grew.

She always loved the first day at a new job, but this one—this one—would put her fireplace and chimney company on the map. Working in a historic brownstone practically at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge was going to be a delight, even if it was a bitch to find a parking space. She loved this part of Brooklyn Heights, and with ten fireplaces to restore, they were going to have one hell of a job to brag about.

As long as everything went smoothly.

Her gloved hand wrapped around something long, thin, and hard. What the hell? She gave a good tug and withdrew a bone. Great, another dead animal. She’d better get it out of the firebox before Bart saw it. With his sick sense of humor, God only knew what perverse ideas he’d come up with just to get a laugh.

Grabbing a droplight, she brought it over to the opening and aimed it down into the pit, peering over the half-wall.

Empty eye sockets stared back at her.

Shock waves rocketed through her body, unleashing a guttural scream. She jerked back, dropping the light and whacking her head against the opening of the firebox.

Her butt hit the ground hard. She cradled the back of her skull, more from reflex than from actual pain. Her mind was too numb for that.

No, it can’t be.

Emma stared at the bone still gripped in her hand. “Ew!” She flung it aside.

In seconds, her men surrounded her.

“Emma, what’s wrong?” Bart’s normally pink-hued face appeared white even against his reddish blond hair.

She opened her mouth to speak but instead released a high-pitched squeak. Carlos offered a hand.

She grabbed it, hoping to draw strength from him before he pulled her up. The guys stared at her, waiting for some direction.

With her heart attempting to punch a hole through her chest, she inched toward the fireplace and picked up the lamp again. Hesitating, she braced herself before glancing over what remained of the brick wall.

Grotesque. Surreal. Contorted into the form of what was once a human being. The skull looked dingy brown in the bright light of the drop lamp. Arm bones, pinned behind the rib cage, were visible beneath the debris.

“There’s a body in here,” she whispered.

Book Excerpt from Shadow’s Moon

Snippet time! Today we’re sharing an excerpt from paranormal romance / urban fantasy “Shadow’s Moon”. We hope you enjoy the snippet.

Read an Excerpt

Warrick’s need to protect Xander was going to tear him apart.

She wanted a partner, not a protector. He was bonded to a warrior and not just any warrior, but one of the most lethal fighters in the Kyn community. She was a damn Wraith, a premier hunter of monsters. Dammit, he knew she could handle herself, but the animal prowling under his skin wasn’t easily calmed.

He reined his emotions in, locking them away from the connection he shared with Xander. He didn’t want her to see just how close he was to losing it. He forced his fingers to uncurl from the bedpost. Teasing her about the damn bet had given him a touchstone to keep the man in the driver’s seat, while covering his wolf’s desperate need for the reassurance of her touch.

He grabbed a pair of sweats from his dresser before stepping over the mangled nude body lying on the floor amongst shards of glass from the shattered window. He pulled the sweats on then picked up his cell phone from the nightstand and flicked on the lamp. The warm light pushed back the room’s shadows as he tucked his cell between his shoulder and ear then crouched next to the body.

On the fourth ring, Ryuu answered. “Yeah?”

“How soon can you make it to my house?” Warrick demanded.

There was a pause. “Fifteen minutes.”

“Good. I had some unexpected visitors tonight.” He turned the body over, inspecting it.

Ryuu snarled softly. “How many?”

“Three. Two wolves, one wizard.”
Warrick studied the slack face, ignoring the gaping hole where a jugular once resided. Under the gore, the body bore numerous scars. Amidst the ragged claw marks were the tell-a-tale puckers of several bullet wounds.

“A wizard? Do you need me to arrange a meeting with Cheveyo?” Ryuu asked.

“No,” Warrick ground out.

The name of the most powerful witch in the Northwest had Warrick’s wolf surging against the man’s restraints. He picked his way through the miasma of emotion roiling under his skin. Was Cheveyo a threat? A soft growl vibrated across his spirit. A flash of Xander standing between a shadowy evil and Cheveyo seared his mind.

He pinched the bridge of his nose. This damn bond was driving him and his wolf crazy. “No,” he repeated. “Not just yet.”

Maybe there was something more going on than what he could see right now. Xander was safe downstairs with the dead wizard. Cheveyo was the logical choice to go to for information, but unease whispered through him.

“Warrick, whoever it was sent three against one,” Ryuu said. “They weren’t playing around.”

“Three against two,” he corrected.

There was a pause then, “Damn it, Vidis! Your woman’s gonna wipe out my bank account. She just couldn’t wait until the next full moon?”

Lifting his head, Warrick adjusted the cell. “You were betting on when we’d have sex?”

Ryuu chuckled softly. “Actually the whole pack has a pool going.”

Warrick shook his head, fighting the small grin tugging at his lips. “Get over here, Ryuu, and bring a couple of helping hands. Oh, and be prepared to pay up.”

Book Excerpt from The Howling Heart

Book Excerpt

Riley was a beautiful wolf. It made sense, considering he was a beautiful man. The sunlight streaming through the windows in the living room touched parts of his body and revealed his entire coat was the color of pure snow. A soft glow emanated from his amber eyes, and they were almost hypnotic. In the light of day, they didn’t glow as brightly as they did at night.

Riley and I were both still, our gazes locked on each other. I had lost the capacity to speak. I couldn’t believe what I had witnessed. Two humans had transformed into wolves, one right in front of me. How is this possible?

He stepped forward, slowly and cautiously, and my muscles tensed. He took another step until he was close enough to touch. My breathing increased, and I pressed my back against the sofa. I wouldn’t dare touch him. I wasn’t sure if he could control his animal form. He whimpered as he sat on his hind legs and put his head on my knee. There was a message behind his eyes that I didn’t understand.

“He’s not going to hurt you, Paige.”

I turned my head to see Quinn had transformed back into her human form. Her breasts were exposed, but she didn’t seem embarrassed. It became obvious the twins were comfortable being naked around me. She looked at her brother and then settled her blue eyes on me.

“It’s still Riley,” she said quietly. “He’s fully aware of what’s going on. He knows it’s you.”

Quinn must’ve noticed my hesitation. I’ll admit her words made me feel more comfortable.

Blog Tour: Book Excerpt Chasing The Witch

I’m hosting an excerpt from Chasing The Witch, a paranormal romance novel and the second in the Boston Witch series. I loved this excerpt and hope you enjoy it as well!

Book Excerpt

William looked at the clock as he headed out the door. It was 6:45 and the air was cold on his skin. He tightened his scarf, pulled up his collar and started into the night. Within thirty minutes, he was walking through the gates of the cemetery. Fog rolled along the ground, giving the place an eerie white glow.  With quick steps, he headed straight back to the tombs. Leaves crunched under his feet as he walked. Stopping in front of the last one, he got the metal folding chair he kept behind the bush next to it and sat down.

“You haven’t come for a while,” a voice said from the darkness.

“I know. I apologize. I’ve been busy and I couldn’t get away.”

The voice laughed, a dry bitter sound in the silence of the night. “When will you release me from this prison?”

“I don’t know that I can, Patrick. How do I know that you’re any less dangerous than you were before?”

“Don’t you trust me, William?”

William was silent for a while. He couldn’t think of anything to say to his brother. He wanted to tell him about Jilly; but he never did. He figured it would be like rubbing salt in Patrick’s wounds.  Wanting the closeness they had once shared but knowing it wouldn’t happen caused a knot to form in the pit of his stomach.

“That’s it, then isn’t it? You don’t trust that I can behave. How can I prove that I’ve changed if you won’t let me out?”

“It’s more complicated than that, Patrick. There are other factors in play that you would affect.” He was angry now. “Why did you not tell me about Mary, Patrick?” He heard a sharp intake of breath from inside.

“Mary? How dare you speak her name to me! It was you and your precious Liza who kept me from her to begin with. Why should I have told you anything?”

“I’ve seen her, Patrick, and she’s more like you than she ever was, before. The years have turned her bitter.”

Patrick hissed in the darkness, seething with anger. “What gives you the right to deprive me of my match? Where is she?”

“She’s contained somewhere, like you. She won’t be getting out, either. So even if I let you out eventually, you’ll never get to her. The two of you together would cause too much destruction for this earth and I will not have it.” He pushed his chair back. “I shouldn’t have come,” he said sadly. “I had just hoped that maybe you could be saved, but I see now that I was wrong.” He picked up his chair and walked back through the cemetery. He could still hear Patrick screaming in rage half a mile away.
