Excerpt 2 – Monster Imagined

It had been so simple and easy to replace the flashlight’s batteries when he could see what he was doing. His shaking hands, suddenly had five thumbs each.

Xander heard a noise. It was very near. He froze in place. The noise stopped, too. Several long seconds crept by. Had it been just his imagination? Xander pondered the question for a few moments. No, he’d definitely heard it.

The sound could have been tiny toenails tapping on the rocky ground. A chill ran down his spine. The faint noise started again. It was right in front of him! He jumped back. The noise jumped with him. Xander kicked and swung his feet and arms out in all directions. The batteries flew out of the metal tube, bouncing off the side wall before they clattered and rolled off. The other noise got louder. His lethal feet were ready to strike out again.   It sounded very close… Impossibly close… It was, Xander realized, coming from inside his own head!

He slipped his dry tongue between his teeth. The noise quit immediately. His own chattering teeth turned out to be the blood sucking, dagger-clawed, evil creature that had been about to devour him.

Embarrassment overrode fear. Then a different fear gripped him.

Oh, no! The spring… He touched the end of the cap with his pinky finger.   Miracle upon miracle, after all that, he found the spring still attached. Revved up from the sudden surge of adrenalin, Xander tried to calm down. He declared the area around him to be a monster-free zone. He felt better.

When he was much younger he’d been deathly afraid of the dark. Preschool Alexander was convinced that monsters lurked in the closet and under his bed. The strongest memory Xander had of his father was one night he came to his room, and declared the top of Xander’s bed to be a ‘monster-free zone’. It had worked. Xander sometimes had to sneak across the dark bedroom at night, but he always felt safe once he climbed onto the ‘monster-free zone’.

There they were, right in the middle of one of the murkiest, eeriest, creepiest and darkest swamps in all the Refuge. It was pitch black, and yet the old mole could see his friend’s tiny face as if it were noon on a fair day. It was bright and glowing. At that moment the mole knew his hunches were right—something special was indeed happening.

Book Excerpt

“Hey, guys, did Zach tell you about the animal we saw on the path today?” Matt asked, gathering in his winnings.

Eric snorted. “Yeah—some lame story about a bear running on its hind legs.”

“It wasn’t a bear,” Matt said, which got everyone’s attention. Zach’s expression was quizzical as his friend continued. “When I was delivering papers this afternoon, a really tall, furry animal ran across old Doc Payne’s front lawn. I think it was the same one we saw earlier. It looked like Bigfoot.”

            Travis laughed.

“I’m not kidding you guys,” Matt said, defending himself. “It really looked like Bigfoot.”

Zach picked up the cards. “That would explain why it was so tall. Wow—what if it was Bigfoot?”

“That would be so cool,” Eric said.

They all agreed. Matt looked toward the mountain. What is a Bigfoot creature was wondering around on the ridge?

The boys anted up for the next hand. As Zach reshuffled the cards, a red glow appeared over the ridge. Matt jumped up so quickly that he knocked the bag of chips over. He pointed up.

“Look—the lights are back!” He quickly reached down and grabbed his can of Mountain Dew and took a big swig.

Everyone looked up toward the mountains. Sure enough, there it was—a huge red glow.

Travis stood, staring at the display. “Boy that’s awesome. Looks just like fireworks. And it’s getting bigger.”

Zach jumped up and grabbed Matt. “No, it’s not getting bigger—it’s getting closer.”

The red light morphed into a huge pulsating globe, and in seconds it was only a hundred feet away, hovering over the ball field.

Matt stared wide-eyed at the sinister sphere. His hands shook so uncontrollably he spilled the nearly full can of soda down the front of himself and felt its coldness soak through his cargo shorts. He tried to speak but his tongue stuck to the roof of his dry mouth.

Directly above, a pulsating red globe hung in the air, defying gravity; a bright beam of white light from the menacing object lit up parts of the field below.

Matt stood motionless as if hypnotized by the aerial display. The globe zigzagged across the ball field, getting closer and closer to the campfire.

Someone yelled, “Run, guys! Run for your lives!”

Matt Monroe and The Secret Society is the first book in a series about a fourteen-year-old boy and his friends. This is an account of deception and betrayal, mixed with courage and the bonds of friendship. Prepare yourself for an exciting adventure with an extraordinary ending. The second book in the series, Matt Monroe and The Haunted House, continues the story of these courage young teens.

Matt Monroe is just like every other fourteen year old boy: careless, ready for adventure, and brave enough to fight the good fight. When strange lights appear in town, all the town’s kids know something is up. Some suspects it’s aliens, others think it’s ghosts, everyone has their own theory.

But that’s not the only weird thing happening in town. A strange creature finds its way into Matt’s parents’ barn, and tries to steal a box that belonged to Matt’s great grandfather. When Matt touches the box, two tablets fall out.

He finds out his parents, along with several other dentists, are part of a secret society to save the world from an elf named Damien, who turned evil hundreds of years ago, and ever since wants to destroy the world. The prophecy says a chosen one will be picked, and he will be able to read the tablets. Unfortunately, that role falls on Matt.

Having to perform a leading role, with not his own life at stake, but that of many others, Matt travels to another dimension where he meets elves, tooth fairies and lots more.

The great part about this book was how it was inspired by dentists, and there was a fantasy world build around dentists, the tooth fairy, etc. That was an unique concept, and I really liked it. It surprised me.

Matt had an okay personality, but I actually liked his brother Josh more. The bond between the brothers was strong, and I like books with good sibling dynamics, so that’s another bonus.

The only downside to the book, is the large amount of characters, which means we get tons of characters who are one-dimensional, and who only seem to be thrown in to get to the number of seven to partake on the quest. They all play their part, sure, but we get to know little of their personality.

Book Review From Frights to Flaws by Sunayna Prasad

FromFrightsToFlaws_SC-13-05-101Title: Alyssa McCarthy’s Magical Missions, Book 1, From Frights to Flaws

Genre: MG Fantasy

Magic and mayhem ensure in this delightful read by author Sunayna Prasad. Alyssa McCarthy has led a tough life. After her parents passed away, she came to live with her aunt and uncle. Unfortunately, after her aunt passed away as well, her uncle turned into a very tough, difficult man. He even takes Alyssa and her cousin out of school and has them homeshooled. I kind of get where the uncle is coming from, but he was still mean.

When a magical statue appears, warning Alyssa of what is to come and an evil wizard trying to kidnap her, her uncle doesn’t believe her. But then Alyssa gets kidnapped into a magical world where she’ll have to fight said wizard to escape…

The writing is great for middle graders, and the story very enjoyable. A nice, short read.

“Let’s go inside,” said Alyssa. She opened the backdoor and stepped inside after Hailey. They walked down the hallway to the front area of the house—only for a strange voice with a French accent to say, “Bonjour, Mesdemoiselles.”

Turning to the kitchen, Alyssa and Hailey shrieked at the strange man. He stood only a few inches taller than her, despite his beach ball-sized belly. The top of his bald head shone, a tassel wild black hair surrounding it. A bushy mustache covered the area between his nose and upper lip. More importantly, he wore an evil smile, filled with yellow teeth.

“Hello!” called Uncle Bruce. “Who’s here?”

Everyone turned to him as he ran down the stairs. But the stranger held out his hand, making some sort of stick appear.

Somnum Harena!” he roared.

Orange sand swirled out of the stick, finding its way into Uncle Bruce’s eyes. He cried out in pain, falling onto the floor.

“Dad!” exclaimed Hailey.

“Silence!” shouted the man, pointing his stick at Hailey. “He won’t wake up for another twelve hours!”

But that stick was no stick—it had to be his wand. What else could release swirling sand? Nothing. So that man had to be none other than…

“B-Beau Duchamp?” Alyssa identified him, guessing.

“Yes, although I’d prefer ‘Master Beau,’ if you don’t mind.”

“Never mind, what did you do to my dad?” yelled Hailey.

“I put him to sleep,” said Master Beau.

The girls gasped.

“I meant that literally. I didn’t kill him.”

“Still—get out of here!” commanded Alyssa.

“No!” bellowed Master Beau. “There’s a reason I did all that stuff to harm you! I need you to have zero protections so that I can take you to the Fiji Islands as soon as possible!”
