Book Excerpt from Shawndirea

Book Excerpt

Sunlight filtered through the leafy canopy. Several birds flew low across the stream and through the trees. Seconds later two yellow butterflies glided to the edge of the far bank and landed. A larger butterfly caught his attention. At first glance he thought it was a giant swallowtail, but instead, it turned out to be an oversized tiger swallowtail.

Ben’s fingers tightened around the net handle. He pushed himself to his feet. He stepped lightly and headed toward the stream to get a better look at the butterflies. Near the bank, a blur of metallic bluish-green streaked past him.

“Damn!” he said, watching the zipping wings catch the breeze and glide.

With incredible speed, it darted up, down, left to right, and along the stream’s edge. Perhaps the sweltering heat or near dehydration was playing tricks on him, but he was almost certain glittery dust trailed behind it.

Ben hurried after the butterfly, a prize unlike any other in his collection.

Few butterflies in this part of Kentucky had such metallic colorings. One he thought of immediately was the White M Hairstreak, but this one was too large and flew much swifter. Another butterfly with similar colors was the long-tailed skipper, but the sheen sparkling off the butterfly following the stream was too bright. Its flight was also more erratic. The skipper stayed near gardens, and he doubted any strayed this far into the woods since the larvae food plant was the leaf of various beanstalks.

Ben realized he had just discovered something new. Excitement shot through him.

He hurried along the stream and jumped over a fallen tree. His sudden pursuit had not gone unnoticed. The iridescent creature darted downward and swept through the tiny branches of a shrub. But Ben moved faster.

As the beautifully winged specimen shot through the other side of the bush, Ben arced the net sharply and captured his prize. The end of the net pulled and stretched while his captive struggled to fight free.

Quickly, Ben clamped his fingers near the end of the net, but by the time he did, the struggling ceased.

He opened the net and looked inside. His eyes widened.

“What the hell?” he asked.

At the bottom of the net lay a gorgeous creature, but not what he had expected to capture. Her wings were tattered, frayed. Unconscious, he hoped, but he feared she might be dying or already dead. Broken scales and wing fragments covered her nearly nude body.

His excitement of the chase suddenly turned to regret and dread.

A faery?

Ben dropped to his knees and gently set down the net.

“God,” he whispered. “I hope I didn’t kill you.”

To get to Aetheaon, they must pass through a portal rift deep inside the haunted cavern, Devils Den. Book Excerpt

“Just another distinction between us and the humans,” Aunt Tilda mused softly, almost to herself. “We were once immortal. Then more and more they broke the rules, got involved with the humans, and produced children with scrambled up DNA, like you and me. It’s a recessive gene, you know— it only shows up every so many generations in the families that carry it. The last time it showed up, was me. There has never been another, until you.”

“The… humans?” Till’s head swam. “You speak of humans as if they’re something you and I are not. If we’re not that, could you explain to me exactly what you think we are then?”

“Fairy Godmothers, dear.” She said it casually, without ceremony.

Till slid down the wall and sat on the floor. “I’m sorry, but did you just say…”

Aunt Tilda sighed. “What I am about to tell you won’t be easy to accept, Till. I can only hope that in the days ahead that you will be able to come to terms with what it all means. I hope it will bring you some comfort, finally understanding why it is that you’ve always been different,” she explained. “I’m a Fairy Godmother, Till, and so are you. Well, not quite yet… but the process has already started, and your adult traits are beginning to show up. Things you may have worried weren’t normal about yourself… like the insomnia. All easily explained, because they are all a part of who you are meant to become.”

Till laughed out loud. “You mean, like in Cinderella… that kind of Fairy Godmother?”

“Well, we tend to dress a little more stylishly and have better hair, but yes, like that.” She saw how troubled Till was by this revelation. “Are you all right, dear?”

“Am I… am I all right?” Till exclaimed. “She tells me I’m some sort of fairy human hybrid and then she asks me if I’m all right?” She scrambled to her feet and started for the door. “Aunt Tilda, I don’t mean any disrespect, but you are sincerely freaking me out right now, and I think I need to take a walk.”

“But we’ve so much work to do, and not much time left.”

“I know, I know… you keep telling me that.”

“There’s a package from the lawyer that you need to look at. I’ve taken care of everything already, but you need to—”

“I really need some air… I’m sorry.” Till dashed for the nearest door, which happened to be the one to the back porch, and ran outside without her coat.

It was snowing, coming down in a flurry that made it difficult to see the sky. She fought to catch her breath, tilting her head up toward the faded image of the sun as it tried to break through heavy clouds. It only succeeded in sending down a few thin, bright shafts.

She felt sick, and yet something about what the old woman was saying did not feel crazy to her anymore. That part was beginning to worry her more than anything else.

Book Excerpt

Fully armored and protected, Crystal Tiffany is ready, a warrior. She runs. She looks behind her as urgency and concern grows on her face. She looks forward, digs deep within for a bit more energy, and finds it in desperation to continue running with haste.

Suddenly, a sparkling white horse, a stallion, gallops from behind, racing up to the warrior’s right. Crystal Tiffany extends her right hand and grabs hold of the horse’s long, flowing mane. She pulls herself up, mounting the creature with ease, strength, and rhythm. “Faster!” she yells. “I need you to go faster!!”

The sparkling white stallion obeys and begins galloping even harder, going even faster.

She then snaps her right arm behind her back, and more stars crystallize. Crystal Tiffany removes a sword from its sheath. The star-formed handle is golden, but the blade consists of the brightest stars in existence; it is white, like a strike of lightning. Crystal Tiffany lifts her right arm higher and higher. She then swings the arm down, slashing her sword across its back. A shrill scream fills the sky, and something golden and glowing falls from its grasp. The stallion gallops past it. The warrior pulls back on her stallion’s mane, forcing him to turn around. She hops off the horse and screams. She screams and yells again, as loud as she can. She must let it know she is here, that she is not afraid, so she emits her most vicious war cry. She was not running; no, Crystal Tiffany was giving chase.

She chases the giant, the monster, the entity, the beast comprised entirely of dark matter—the darkness of the sky, the evil of the Earth caused by all the wrongdoing, that which oozes up from the surface of the decrepit planet and creates acid rain that destroys all beneath it. This dark matter, the giant menace, has eyes that swirl inward, a vortex of a black hole. Its pupils glow, two twinkles, as if there once existed a light of hope and goodness there; clearly, that light was sucked inside the wickedness and now just falls and keeps falling endlessly, a reminder of the hollowness it created, the hollowness it is. The monster’s eyes are hypnotic, however; if anyone stares into those eyes in fear, that one’s soul will be devoured. Above those eyes are thick, charcoal-gray brows that flow upward, the stuff of smog and smugness.

The beast looks backward in search of the object it dropped, then quickly glances forward and lets out a deafening, horrific growl at Crystal Tiffany. It bears its black mouth, flaunting its ominous, jagged, metallic teeth. The animal then flashes the talons that make up his hands: sharpened, long, metallic claws instead of fingers, so deadly sharp and glowing silver.

They charge, running toward one another at the speed of vengeance.

“I’m not afraid of you!” Crystal Tiffany screams as she runs.

Book Excerpt from Crossing Forbidden Lines

We’re hosting an excerpt from coming-of-age fantasy novel “Crossing Forbidden Lines”. Enjoy the excerpt.

Book Excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter Two of CROSSING FORBIDDEN LINES

Blood filled the trench and Olchemy got out of there—and in the nick of time, for the axe which must’ve chopped off the Giant’s head crashed into the spot Olchemy just abandoned. Were the Titans still alive after all? When he looked across the valley, he soon found out.

Yes, they were and so were the Giants, all coming out of hiding while the flood passed. It would be easy to tell them apart. Giants always stood between twelve to fifteen feet tall, wore simple ragged garments, and looked either grumpy or slow-to-wit. Titans stood fifteen to twenty-five feet, wore beautiful, clean loose clothing and carried a look of nobility…Though this same nobility seemed to have been lost over the years, being replaced by rage. In fact, both races were once said to be peaceful, caring and possessing of magic, especially the Titans.

It is told this grace fell during the end of the Second Age and their hearts began to slip, driving them into madness. No one could remember why. Some say they disliked the changes of the world and others said the Dark put a curse on them. Whatever the reason, one thing seemed sure, this happened the same time the Wizard Crystals and their Guardians disappeared—leaving not a trace. An era shrouded in mystery indeed.

While Olchemy waited for another battle to erupt, he soon noticed theses two opposing races were not fighting anymore, but working together, focusing on something else—something from above.

There he was, just as Olchemy feared, the High Wizard Levieth, sitting upon his Wyvern. A fearful fifty foot long dragon creature, having a dark-brown and gray body, orange eyes, huge leathery wings with a long tail carrying a deadly stinger. Hovering in the air, it roared sounding like ten angry bulls.

The Giants and Titans let loose a storm of arrows and javelins, all racing toward the evil in the sky.

Levieth countered by thrusting his staff forward, casting a type of energy or spell invisible to the eye. Transparent, the weapons slowed their pace shining with bluish-white lights, and then changed course, plunging toward the attackers themselves, each one to its wielder.

They all ran for cover but it didn’t matter; the weapons were not free falling, Levieth controlled them by telekinesis. Wherever the Giants or Titans hid, the arrows and javelins found their ‘masters’ and slaughtered them.

Only one slipped away…A Titan, merely because he hadn’t been among those who attacked. From the very beginning of making war against Levieth he’d been climbing the steep rocky valley and finally reached the top. He stood about twenty feet tall, with long coarse blonde hair and blazing blue eyes. A mighty warrior indeed, perhaps the King, wielding a great war hammer. He ran across the desert, causing sand to spray and scatter, then leapt high into the sky toward his enemy, attempting to crush the intruding evil.

Olchemy silently rooted him on, as it seemed the High Wizard did not take notice.

But another did, the Wyvern. Then just before the Titan could swing, the Wyvern swung its tail, stabbing the Titan through the stomach with its stinger.

He roared in absolute pain from the poison. His eyes bubbled and melted, his skin turned dark green. Then his body crumpled apart entirely, the decayed pieces blowing away in the wind. All seemed finished here—the Giants and Titans obliterated.

Olchemy got down low, forcing himself between clusters of rocks where a slight opening remained, so he could still watch Levieth.

The Wyvern flew a bit higher and Levieth cast yellow lights from his staff, down across the valley, between every crack and in every hole.

Did he search for more enemies, or did he sense Olchemy’s presence? Olchemy did not know. He may have sensed him when he used levitation to avoid the rushing water in the tunnel. How foolish I am! Olchemy thought, his heart racing. If I’m discovered it’s over. I stand no chance. Please let him not find me. Not yet. Please?

Levieth continued to search through the valley, shining his lights everywhere, even against the cluster of rocks Olchemy hid under. Sweat poured off Olchemy’s brow, his hands shaking excessively.

Unexpectedly, the beams went out like a candle flame. The High Wizard seemed to give up his search…Upon his Wyvern, he flew away, heading further south.
