About the Authors

DonnaBrownDonna:  Donna is a longtime book lover and sometime book reviewer and has devoured books from an early age. She writes short (or long) stories as and when inspiration hits and is married to fantasy author David M. Brown (Fezariu’s Epiphany, A World Apart). She was also co-contributor to David’s book, Man vs Cat, a humorous look at life with six rambunctious rescue cats.

Donna has lived in many different areas of the UK over the last 30-something years but has remained in Yorkshire for the past decade. She ardently disputes the misnomer that ‘It’s grim up north’. You can find Donna on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Goodreads, or visit her and her husband’s shared blog: B-Lines and Felines.

DavidBrownDavid:  David Brown could be considered a fantasy fanatic, especially since he has spent the last 10 years developing a 47,000-year history for his fictional world of Elenchera. When converting his obsession into literary form, David commits himself to a rigorous writing and editing process before his work can meet his approval. Combined with the critical eye of his wife and a BA Hons in History and English, David’s dedication leads him to his goal of inspiring readers through heartfelt stories and characters.

Although David is inspired primarily by fantasy fiction, he also finds his muse in the form of anime, world cinema, history, and biographies. His own books, Fezariu’s Epiphany and A World Apart, combine aspects from worlds both old and new into compelling tales of a world not soon forgotten., David himself certainly does not lack a spirit of adventure; in fact, he left his job in 2007 in order to spend a month travelling. Second only to meeting and marrying his wife, David counts this as one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

Book Review The Vineyard

?????????????????????????????????????????????Title: The Vineyard

Author: Michael Hurley

Genre: Literary Fiction

From Michael Hurley, winner of the Somerset Prize for his debut novel, THE PRODIGAL, comes a complex and ambitious, allegorical tale of old money, young passion and ancient mystery in a classic New England seaside village.

Ten years after their college days together, three wounded and very different women reunite for a summer on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. As they come to grips with the challenges and crises in their lives, their encounter with a reclusive poacher known only as “the fisherman” threatens to change everything they believe about their world–and each other.

“Hurley writes beautifully,” says Kirkus Reviews, “especially when describing island and nautical life.” Publishers Weekly praises “his well-crafted prose.”

Three women who haven’t seen each other since their college years, meet up again for a reunion, and agree to spend a summer on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. They’ve changed quite a lot from their college years though, and they have to come to terms with those changes in themselves, and in the others.

They encounter a reclusive poacher called “the fisherman”, who threatens to change everything they ever believed in, about the world, about each other, about themselves. The author uses haunting, lyrical prose to sketch the lives of the women, to make them come alive on the pages. Very impressive.

Author Interview The Vineyard Tour

vineyardbannernew

Today we’re hosting an interview for the book tour for literary fiction “The Vineyard”. We hope you enjoy the interview.

1) What is your book about?

Like most literary fiction, The Vineyard is a multi-layered novel. Several themes and stories are presented at once—some directly, some obliquely, some allegorically—through the lives of the central characters. On one level, The Vineyard is a simple story about three friends who decide to spend the summer together on a beautiful island in New England, ten years after college. They drink wine. They fight. They laugh. They cry. They throw parties. They have sex. A wedding looms. Someone is pregnant. Someone is cheating. Love may be real or it may be hollow. Friendships are tested by pride and jealousy and dishonesty. They support and undermine and betray and forgive each other. Charlotte struggles to recover from the loss of her baby three years ago to cancer. Dory struggles with the legacy of her rich and famous family. Turner struggles with feelings of self-doubt and a need for the adulation of men. For some readers, these events will comprise the entirety of the story. The careful reader will discover, however, that The Vineyard uses these elements and the amorphous persona of “the fisherman” to confront the characters with larger questions: What is the meaning of faith, and where is the line between faith and superstition? What is the literal truth of the faith stories we have been telling ourselves for millennia, and what is the added embroidery of time and wishful thinking? What do we believe about heaven and hell, and by what authority does anyone really know what happens after we die? What masks do we place on the faces of good and evil, and what is the truth that lies beneath? On a deeper level, the story is about the three main characters, and ultimately the reader, attempt to answer these questions.

2) How long did it take you to write the book?

I started on September 1, 2013 and completed the first draft on August 20, 2014 at 11:34 a.m.

3) Please name a few of your favorite authors and tell us why they’re your favorites.

Dickens is my all-time favorite, for wonderful characters, timeless stories, and shining prose. I greatly admire Gillian Flynn for her inventive use of alternating first person in Gone Girl. Somerset Maugham became one of my hero authors when I was nominated for a literary award for my first novel in his honor. I enjoyed his masterpiece, Of Human Bondage. F. Scott Fitzgerald is unequaled, in my opinion, for his ability to see and describe nuances of human character.

4) Will there be more books in this series, or is your book a standalone?

Standalone.

5) Name one thing you absolutely can’t go without when writing
.

Black coffee.

6) Why should people read your book?

I’ll quote one reviewer on Goodreads for an answer to this question:

“I was privileged to read Hurley’s amazing book The Prodigal last year, and reviewed it on Goodreads at the time. It was a gracious book that has never quite let me go. And now, this wonder of a book joins it . . . . Please, please get this more than five star rating book and get ready to be testing everything after you have.” –Andrea, Syracuse, NY

Book Excerpt

I closed my eyes taking a deep breath, as I did I tried not to think about anything, but all I could think was this must be a dream it’s too crazy not to be. After all the first time I saw him, it was a dream and there is no way this was really happening I might as well go with it.

“Now what do I do now?” I asked. “Nothing you’re doing good just try to keep your mind clear.” He said as I opened my eyes, he put his hands together and spoke softly and seriously. As if what he was saying was of grave importance. “Run imprint program 777, subject Human, male, age twelve. Begin imprint process at ten present.” As his words finished I felt something moving through the hand he had poured the liquid in first, then the second hand. At first it was just my hands, then it began to spread throughout my whole body. “Increase imprint rate to fifty present.” He spoke once more as he did, I could feel my body heat up. It started to burn; it was as if my blood was boiling. A few minutes passed like this before he spoke again. “Active all systems, complete imprint now.” He said and as he did the pain grew, I felt as if I was on fire. I screamed out as the pain grew more and more it was like nothing I had ever felt before, I could feel every inch of my body, and it was in pain that just kept getting worst and worst. I could feel my heart beat; with every beat, it felt as if it was, pushing red-hot knives through my vines.

My cries echoed through the darkness but there was nothing and no one to help me I was lost in a world of pain, I soon lost track of time. It seemed as if I was in pain for day’s maybe weeks my screams eventually grew weak as my lungs gave way to the pain.

It was now completely silence, the pain pushed my mind to it limit as my body tried to shut itself down. My lungs gave way, I stopped breathing, I felt my heart slow and come to a stop. Somehow, I was still alive, the pain grew still, I reach my limit after what seemed like weeks, and then my mind gave way.

I woke up sweating in my bed. I jumped up and looked around my room. “Did I just have a bad dream? It must have been but it felt so real.” I said as I began to stand, I stood up then unbelievable pain shot up my spine into my head and knock me back down. “Oh no it was real? No it couldn’t be it was just a dream and it was over now.” I slowly made my way to my feet and got something to drink as I returned I looked in the mirror in my room.

There seem to be something written on it, it took a while for me to be able to read what it said. “I will see you in three years to complete the imprint.”

Guest Post I Am Ella. Buy Me. Tour

Guest Post

Meet Ella. And her bad boys.

In my first novel, I am Ella. Buy me, Ella works for a bad boss and falls for a bad boy. Been there, done that, got the nervous tick to prove it.

Her boss, Peter is a chauvinist pig and proud of it. Well it was the 80s. We’ve all met his ilk. You probably handled them better than I did. Hopefully, you didn’t handle them at all.

One charmer actually had the front to ask me: I’ve never had you, have I?

It was the worrying level of uncertainty that got me. Obviously, I was just one in a long line of blonde copywriters and he was too befuddled to tell us apart. Very flattering. Oh and for the record, the answer was a very definite, No.

As for the bad boy in Ella’s life, she falls for rising singing star, Tom. Like all cads, he homes in when she’s at her lowest ebb. It’s no plot-spoiler to say Peter fires her the first chance he gets. Enter Tom, the man who refers to himself in the third person but always puts himself first.

They may be reluctant to admit it but most women I know have had at least one Tom in their life. These men are experts in gaining our trust. They play the nice guy for just long enough to convince us they are the real deal and get us hooked. Then, the minute our backs are turned, they’re getting it on with their next victim. Close encounters with callow youths are often an exciting but disturbing rite of passage. Like all toxic substances, these boys are highly addictive. Cold turkey is the only way to go. Step away from the phone.

Meet Ella. You’ll like her. In some ways she’s just like you.
