Author Interview The Vineyard Tour

vineyardbannernew

Today we’re hosting an interview for the book tour for literary fiction “The Vineyard”. We hope you enjoy the interview.

1) What is your book about?

Like most literary fiction, The Vineyard is a multi-layered novel. Several themes and stories are presented at once—some directly, some obliquely, some allegorically—through the lives of the central characters. On one level, The Vineyard is a simple story about three friends who decide to spend the summer together on a beautiful island in New England, ten years after college. They drink wine. They fight. They laugh. They cry. They throw parties. They have sex. A wedding looms. Someone is pregnant. Someone is cheating. Love may be real or it may be hollow. Friendships are tested by pride and jealousy and dishonesty. They support and undermine and betray and forgive each other. Charlotte struggles to recover from the loss of her baby three years ago to cancer. Dory struggles with the legacy of her rich and famous family. Turner struggles with feelings of self-doubt and a need for the adulation of men. For some readers, these events will comprise the entirety of the story. The careful reader will discover, however, that The Vineyard uses these elements and the amorphous persona of “the fisherman” to confront the characters with larger questions: What is the meaning of faith, and where is the line between faith and superstition? What is the literal truth of the faith stories we have been telling ourselves for millennia, and what is the added embroidery of time and wishful thinking? What do we believe about heaven and hell, and by what authority does anyone really know what happens after we die? What masks do we place on the faces of good and evil, and what is the truth that lies beneath? On a deeper level, the story is about the three main characters, and ultimately the reader, attempt to answer these questions.

2) How long did it take you to write the book?

I started on September 1, 2013 and completed the first draft on August 20, 2014 at 11:34 a.m.

3) Please name a few of your favorite authors and tell us why they’re your favorites.

Dickens is my all-time favorite, for wonderful characters, timeless stories, and shining prose. I greatly admire Gillian Flynn for her inventive use of alternating first person in Gone Girl. Somerset Maugham became one of my hero authors when I was nominated for a literary award for my first novel in his honor. I enjoyed his masterpiece, Of Human Bondage. F. Scott Fitzgerald is unequaled, in my opinion, for his ability to see and describe nuances of human character.

4) Will there be more books in this series, or is your book a standalone?

Standalone.

5) Name one thing you absolutely can’t go without when writing
.

Black coffee.

6) Why should people read your book?

I’ll quote one reviewer on Goodreads for an answer to this question:

“I was privileged to read Hurley’s amazing book The Prodigal last year, and reviewed it on Goodreads at the time. It was a gracious book that has never quite let me go. And now, this wonder of a book joins it . . . . Please, please get this more than five star rating book and get ready to be testing everything after you have.” –Andrea, Syracuse, NY

From Michael Hurley, winner of the Somerset Prize for his debut novel, THE PRODIGAL, comes a complex and ambitious, allegorical tale of old money, young passion and ancient mystery in a classic New England seaside village.

Ten years after their college days together, three wounded and very different women reunite for a summer on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. As they come to grips with the challenges and crises in their lives, their encounter with a reclusive poacher known only as “the fisherman” threatens to change everything they believe about their world–and each other.

“Hurley writes beautifully,” says Kirkus Reviews, “especially when describing island and nautical life.” Publishers Weekly praises “his well-crafted prose.”

That voyage and the experiences that inspired him to set sail became the subject of his memoir, Once Upon A Gypsy Moon, published in 2013 by Hachette Book Group.

When he is not writing, Michael enjoys reading and relaxing with Susan on the porch of their rambling, one-hundred-year-old house.  His fondest pastimes are ocean sailing, playing piano and classical guitar, cooking, and keeping up with an energetic Irish terrier, Frodo Baggins.

bannerjack2

We’re hosting an interview for “Jack Canon’s American Destiny” tour today.

Author Interview

1) What is your book about?

The book features Jack Canon, a charismatic senator from Kentucky, in his “All-In” run for the White House. He meets a lot of obstacles along his way, from corrupt politicians to relationship troubles to murder conspiracies. But, Jack will stop at nothing to become president, and to get the chance to change the world and make it a better place. Even if that puts his own life at risk. The ending will have you pulling the covers and drawing the shades.  You’ll wonder if it’s even legal to read.

2) How long did it take you to write the book?

It took me six months from start to finish to write the first draft of Jack Canon’s American Destiny.

3) Name a few of your favorite authors and why.

Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Eckart Tolle, I love books on spirituality.

4) Will there be more books in this series, or is your book a standalone?

Jack Canon’s American Destiny is part of a series. The short answer is probably 7 installments. I can see it continuing as long as there are problems in the world for him to resolve. Jack Canon wants to make a difference.

5) Name one thing you absolutely can’t go without when writing.

My computer, I use word. Second, for my morning writing, coffee.

6) Why should everyone read your book?

One reader review put it this way, “Readers will love Jack Canon from the very first pages. He is confident and ready to fight for his dream. He has wanted to change this cruel and unjust world since he was 10 years old. Now he has a real chance to make a difference and he’s not going to let it go. America needs such a man. So, if you’re …indignant at what is currently happening, then you’re going to love this amazing character.
 Another reader reviewed:
“Jack Canon’s American Destiny” is a suspenseful and fast-paced novel that has just the right amount of humor to make you laugh out loud but still take the plot seriously. And just when you think there’s nothing else this novel can do to surprise you, you’ll be shocked by an incredible twist. I’m not going to say more about the action, so you’ll have to discover the best parts on your own.”

About The Book

6065346[1]Title: Jack Canon’s American Destiny

Author: Greg Sandora

Genre: Political Thriller

It’s the steamy summer of 2016 in Washington, D.C. just days before the Democratic National Convention. A long and painful recession has left ordinary Americans suffering, spawning the hottest Presidential Contest in history. Jack Canon, a man born into privilege, a witness to great social injustice is going to be President of the United States–no matter what! Desperate and corrupt, the leader of the free world orders a hit to slow him down. The plan backfires–the wrong people are dead–a manhunt points to the unthinkable–The President of the United States.
Rewind one year, Jack’s focus on redistribution of wealth and energy has made him powerful enemies. Once his friends, Rogue Billionaires, Oil Sheiks, the Mob, all want him gone. The current President wants him alive–thinking he can win against an unabridged liberal. A Universal Raw Nerve of wealth vs. poverty is exposed becoming a thrill ride as deep machinations of espionage, geo-politics and deception, even murder play out. Kind and charismatic, Jack’s just naughty enough to have you falling for him like one of his loving circle of loyal friends. Of course he’s flawed, a dedicated family man, faithful to one woman, but in love with two. Is it his fault his best friend is impossibly jaw dropping beautiful? Think the crime and passion of the Godfather meets the romance and innocence of Camelot. A story that could spark a movement, a book that can seed a revolution. A heart thumping climax so shocking you’ll pull the covers and draw the shades! One things for sure, through all the drama and suspense, you’ll be pulling for Jack!

Author Bio

3929240[1]_optI’m originally from the Portland, Maine area and lived and worked there for years before moving to Southwest Florida. I am currently working on the sequel to Jack Canon’s American Destiny – which will be titled Jack Canon Clean Sweep. The sequel will be available in about three months.

My Dad and Mom were artists, my father painted and my mother wrote poetry and loved to garden. Most Saturdays we loaded up the 1970 Chevy Impala to trek to a one man show somewhere or other. I took a different track graduating with a business degree; owning and operating an Award Winning Franchise Fitness Center. Currently a professional manager I am living in Florida with my beautiful wife and children, and following my passion.
Some of my other projects include a children’s book called Sammy the Sea Turtle – about an infant sea turtle taken from his nest the night he was to find his way to the sea. Sammy lives with the family until their son – the boy who took him, graduates from high school. On that day Sammy, backpack in tow – begins the long journey home.
My second project in the works involves angels – a man during a visit to Bar Harbor Maine encounters an angel; quite accidentally, he is told – she was not supposed to make him aware of her existence. Only three others have ever seen the real thing. Naturally he falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful creature.
