Guest Post I Am Ella. Buy Me. Tour

iamellabanner

Guest Post

Meet Ella. And her bad boys.

In my first novel, I am Ella. Buy me, Ella works for a bad boss and falls for a bad boy. Been there, done that, got the nervous tick to prove it.

Her boss, Peter is a chauvinist pig and proud of it. Well it was the 80s. We’ve all met his ilk. You probably handled them better than I did. Hopefully, you didn’t handle them at all.

One charmer actually had the front to ask me: I’ve never had you, have I?

It was the worrying level of uncertainty that got me. Obviously, I was just one in a long line of blonde copywriters and he was too befuddled to tell us apart. Very flattering. Oh and for the record, the answer was a very definite, No.

As for the bad boy in Ella’s life, she falls for rising singing star, Tom. Like all cads, he homes in when she’s at her lowest ebb. It’s no plot-spoiler to say Peter fires her the first chance he gets. Enter Tom, the man who refers to himself in the third person but always puts himself first.

They may be reluctant to admit it but most women I know have had at least one Tom in their life. These men are experts in gaining our trust. They play the nice guy for just long enough to convince us they are the real deal and get us hooked. Then, the minute our backs are turned, they’re getting it on with their next victim. Close encounters with callow youths are often an exciting but disturbing rite of passage. Like all toxic substances, these boys are highly addictive. Cold turkey is the only way to go. Step away from the phone.

Meet Ella. You’ll like her. In some ways she’s just like you.

Based on Joan’s experiences in Soho’s mad, bad Adland, this fast-paced, funny tale is set against a backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain when money trumps morals
and lust is a must. Thankfully, Ella knows love is more powerful but can two unlikely friendships help her go from a girl in the firing line to a woman calling the shots?

EMANCIPATION

“I quit!” I shouted, my shrill voice echoing through the courtroom. “I resign from this family!”
“Please take your seat, Amy,” said Judge Higgins. “Your theatrics have been noted, but you are in Family Court, not an episode of Law & Order.”
The judge shuffled a pile of legal documents on his tall desk, then set aside the one that prompted the hearing in the first place: Petition for Declaration of Emancipation of a Minor. State law permits minor children, with unresolved parental issues, to leave home and live with someone else. I had filed the papers on my own, with no help from anyone.
What they basically said was that I wanted to be free to live on my own; to be liberated from playing the dutiful daughter; to be released from the grip of my controlling parents. In simpler terms: I wanted a divorce from my family.
It was a bold move to make, especially for a sixteen-year-old.
The August sun shined through the tall windows onto an empty jury box. On this day, no testimony would be given from the witness stand. There were no lawyers, no court reporters, nor spectators in the gallery. The judge didn’t even have a gavel.
My mom and dad sat at a long table normally reserved for high-powered attorneys. I sat at the same table, a few empty chairs down from them. After all, they were the bad guys, not me.
“As to why you are all here,” said the judge, “I have called this hearing to see if this issue can’t be resolved before proceeding further.”
My dad raised his hand and rose to his feet. “What’s the point?” he said. “We are all in agreement in this matter.”
“Absolutely,” added my mother. “Amy wants to move out, and I for one don’t plan to stand in her way.”
“I understand that,” said Judge Higgins, “but before I can issue a ruling, the laws of this state and the Department of Social Services mandate that the court shall first attempt to mitigate the situation, in accordance with Family Code Regulations.”
Legal mumbo jumbo! The “situation” was clear. I no longer wanted to share my life with my parents, and they made no bones about not wanting me around.

About The Book

amy3_coverTitle: The Age of Amy: Channel ‘63

Author: Bruce Edwards

Genre: Young Adult

What if you could tune your TV to the year 1963, and watch—live? A new theme park attraction allows visitors to not only observe, but talk with the people of that turbulent decade. For 16-year-old Amy, it’s the perfect escape from her own time, and the hardships of teenage life in the 21st century.

Things get complicated when Amy falls for a teenage boy in the 60s. Trying to build a relationship across time proves maddening, especially when computers bleep any language that might impact the future. Happily, Amy acquires a “magic clicker” which defeats this annoying restriction. But gaining the ability to speak freely comes with a heavy responsibility: Amy now has the power to alter history!

She struggles to be mindful of her speech, but finds the temptation to reverse the mistakes of the past irresistible. It is November, 1963 on the other side of the TV screen, and President Kennedy is about to be assassinated. Knowing the details of that tragic event, Amy hatches a dangerous plot to save the 35th president, unaware of the deadly consequences facing her long-ago friend, who must carry it out.

Book Review The Luddite’s Guide to Technology

21247087Title: The Luddite’s Guide to Technology

Author: CJS Hayward

Genre: creative non-fiction / religion and spirituality / technology – social aspects

Mammon, as it is challenged in the Sermon on the Mount, represents such wealth and possessions as one could have two thousand years ago. But that is merely beer as contrasted to the eighty proof whisky our day has concocted. The Sermon on the Mount aims to put us in the driver’s seat and not what you could possess in ancient times, and if the Sermon on the Mount says something about metaphorical beer, perhaps there are implications for an age where something more like eighty proof whisky is all around us.

CJS Hayward has written a collection of essays, articles, prayers and even sometimes satirical commentaries on the topic of religion and spirituality, and in particular the connection between religion and technology.

The book gives a critical look into wealth and possessions, and how important they really are. It compares what it said in the old testament, duringthe Sermon on the Mount, and re-evaluates that for the modern era.

An interesting book, and quite enjoyable. Some of the articles and prayers were better than others, but overall the quality was consistent.

Excerpt 2 – Monster Imagined

It had been so simple and easy to replace the flashlight’s batteries when he could see what he was doing. His shaking hands, suddenly had five thumbs each.

Xander heard a noise. It was very near. He froze in place. The noise stopped, too. Several long seconds crept by. Had it been just his imagination? Xander pondered the question for a few moments. No, he’d definitely heard it.

The sound could have been tiny toenails tapping on the rocky ground. A chill ran down his spine. The faint noise started again. It was right in front of him! He jumped back. The noise jumped with him. Xander kicked and swung his feet and arms out in all directions. The batteries flew out of the metal tube, bouncing off the side wall before they clattered and rolled off. The other noise got louder. His lethal feet were ready to strike out again.   It sounded very close… Impossibly close… It was, Xander realized, coming from inside his own head!

He slipped his dry tongue between his teeth. The noise quit immediately. His own chattering teeth turned out to be the blood sucking, dagger-clawed, evil creature that had been about to devour him.

Embarrassment overrode fear. Then a different fear gripped him.

Oh, no! The spring… He touched the end of the cap with his pinky finger.   Miracle upon miracle, after all that, he found the spring still attached. Revved up from the sudden surge of adrenalin, Xander tried to calm down. He declared the area around him to be a monster-free zone. He felt better.

When he was much younger he’d been deathly afraid of the dark. Preschool Alexander was convinced that monsters lurked in the closet and under his bed. The strongest memory Xander had of his father was one night he came to his room, and declared the top of Xander’s bed to be a ‘monster-free zone’. It had worked. Xander sometimes had to sneak across the dark bedroom at night, but he always felt safe once he climbed onto the ‘monster-free zone’.
